“Why did you ask them to come along, anyway?” David asked Vickie. Both agents were in different seats, working on their respective devices. “We could have done this job ourselves and not furthered the clown show that is your reputation at the agency.”

“My clown show rep got your ass this job,” Vickie said, giving a sidelong glare at David out of the corner of her eye. “No one wanted to work with you after your last incident, if you’ll recall. Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.”

“You said you wouldn’t bring that up again.”

“It’s not my fault you couldn’t control your temper. You ruined that man’s life on a hunch.”

“It turns out that hunch was correct,” David said.

“He killed himself because of you, David!” she yelled in the tiny motel room. “You made it so the man couldn’t go outside for fear of being killed by someone.”

“It was just a tattoo.” David looked away, his voice losing its bluster.

“That was not just a tattoo,” Vickie said. “I don’t even want to get into why the fuck you’re so into those things. I’m surprised they even let you join with how much ink you’re carrying around.”

“It’s a new era, a new generation. We have new ways of doing things. No one cares about ink anymore.”

“They tend to when that ink says that they’re traitors to the nation. You’re God damned lucky you even have a job. It’s only because we’re in wartime that it’s getting overlooked to such a degree. They let me take you, so they didn’t have to deal with you - the caveat being I have to. The only reason I didn’t yank that machine out of that room was because I knew they wouldn’t be dumb enough to use it.”

“We should be out there - not cooped up in this shithole of a motel,” he said.

“You’d be driving. My ride’s out inquiring about our latest lead.” Vickie wiped a bead of sweat away from her forehead. “You’d think they’d at least have air conditioning.”

“Fuck this.” David plopped his laptop on the floor by his feet and marched for the door. “I’m getting out of here.”

“Hold your horses,” Vickie said. She watched him stop in his tracks. “I’m all for getting out of this dump. We need to stay productive on her trail.”

“So? We can at least go out and look. We could get lucky and spot her on the sidewalk.”

“Your plan is to pull over and shoot her real quick or something?” Vickie asked. “Don’t be hasty. I have some things I need to look up. I’ve been trying to find this new name we heard about - Lyn Song. There are no social media accounts with that name.”

“She could be renting a house, apartment, or even staying in a motel like this one,” David said. “It’s not a huge town, but we can’t go searching every one.”

“No, but we can run searches, you numbskull, but not on this abysmal connection. We need something faster and more reliable.
