âWhy did you ask them to come along, anyway?â David asked Vickie. Both agents were in different seats, working on their respective devices. âWe could have done this job ourselves and not furthered the clown show that is your reputation at the agency.â
âMy clown show rep got your ass this job,â Vickie said, giving a sidelong glare at David out of the corner of her eye. âNo one wanted to work with you after your last incident, if youâll recall. Donât look a gift horse in the mouth.â
âYou said you wouldnât bring that up again.â
âItâs not my fault you couldnât control your temper. You ruined that manâs life on a hunch.â
âIt turns out that hunch was correct,â David said.
âHe killed himself because of you, David!â she yelled in the tiny motel room. âYou made it so the man couldnât go outside for fear of being killed by someone.â
âIt was just a tattoo.â David looked away, his voice losing its bluster.
âThat was not just a tattoo,â Vickie said. âI donât even want to get into why the fuck youâre so into those things. Iâm surprised they even let you join with how much ink youâre carrying around.â
âItâs a new era, a new generation. We have new ways of doing things. No one cares about ink anymore.â
âThey tend to when that ink says that theyâre traitors to the nation. Youâre God damned lucky you even have a job. Itâs only because weâre in wartime that itâs getting overlooked to such a degree. They let me take you, so they didnât have to deal with you - the caveat being I have to. The only reason I didnât yank that machine out of that room was because I knew they wouldnât be dumb enough to use it.â
âWe should be out there - not cooped up in this shithole of a motel,â he said.
âYouâd be driving. My rideâs out inquiring about our latest lead.â Vickie wiped a bead of sweat away from her forehead. âYouâd think theyâd at least have air conditioning.â
âFuck this.â David plopped his laptop on the floor by his feet and marched for the door. âIâm getting out of here.â
âHold your horses,â Vickie said. She watched him stop in his tracks. âIâm all for getting out of this dump. We need to stay productive on her trail.â
âSo? We can at least go out and look. We could get lucky and spot her on the sidewalk.â
âYour plan is to pull over and shoot her real quick or something?â Vickie asked. âDonât be hasty. I have some things I need to look up. Iâve been trying to find this new name we heard about - Lyn Song. There are no social media accounts with that name.â
âShe could be renting a house, apartment, or even staying in a motel like this one,â David said. âItâs not a huge town, but we canât go searching every one.â
âNo, but we can run searches, you numbskull, but not on this abysmal connection. We need something faster and more reliable.
